Reggae and all its offspring. Jamaica is a country that found itself in the middle of the genre and culture debate. As usual we Jamaica is seen as the Jewel of the Caribbean and the catalyst within pop culture. Jamaica is a small island with a population less than 3million. Logistically based in the Caribbean but extremely close to South America. We are a hr from Florida which makes us close to both continents.
We also share the same waters of Cuba to our left and the island of Santo Domingo to your right. So when we speak about being rich in culture and being eclectic. Then Jamaica is definitely a boiling pot.
Now let’s examine the world. Let’s look at geography and culture. The motto is “Out of many one people”. Now with that being said just imagine the different sounds and traditions that came with these cultures. Take note for the very same reason why most things feel fad like. It’s due to it constantly changing. The different cultures keep putting tradition into play. From our food example escovich fish known very well in Jamaica was introduced to us via the Spaniards. When we add our African heritage to that and the foods brought here like yam, cocoa etc. Which gives us the taste and pallets we have.
Our music is also a reflection of the globe. Which lends to the fact why our culture has always moved and shaped the world of Entertainment. We have on record archives of us creating over a 100 genres of music and over 140 subgenres along the way. Now how is this possible from a nation this size. Again we got the Spanish and French within the same waters. We have some Mirengue, Rocksteady, Reggae we imitated some Jazz and we played along with our brothers in Motown. The sonic of the Caribbean you hear folk legends like Ms Lou and the great Harry Belafonte. So the cadence is renown because we are the sound.
Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, Jimmy Cliff, Pam Hall, JC Lodge, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Kool Herc. Productions from King Tubbies, Sly & Robbie, Dyamics (Chinese Jamaican), Deborahe Glasgow UK Born (Sang on Mr Lover Man ). Point is we will forever be a boiling pot. We will have so many offspring of the Culture. Famous rocker who sang “Many Rivers To Cross”. Bruce Springsteen isn’t arguing about Jamaicans being great and eclectic. We the people know this because we live this.
We have a ratio of most beautiful women on Earth. Numbers was the proof. The smallest island with the most top 10 entries in Ms Universe & Ms World. So again we dominate on the stage of beauty. Our influence seems to keep pushing boundaries. Designers like CDG adapting designs via Jamaican culture. (Seen by the top Popcaan wore at Wireless Festival). The culture is strong. The music and the voices have always been strong.
So whether you Busta Rhymes or the average British kid walking down South London. The Hip Hop head bouncing around New York or even the Free Lover that attends Rototom Reggae Festival. You carry a piece of Jamaica daily in these streets.
