Albums and projects have been dominating the social and media space over the course of the last month. Well for us music and culture lovers it has been an incredible year. From the shows l, performances, Albums, EPs and just bodies of work.
Now the convo moves to was it a better year for Dancehall or is Reggae having its say as the original leaders? Let’s start from 2024 the year Vybz Kartel was released and the onslaught of rumors began. The Dancehall industry was in a frenzy but also in panic as they have never seen anything like this. You know the saying “it’s the unknown that’s scary”. We did enter into new grounds and the announcement of Freedom Street means this might be the biggest local show since Bob Marley had Prime Minister and Opposition shaking hands.
From that announcement Dancehall decided its our time now. We have a bona-fide superstar ready to carry the genre.
Simultaneously Reggae acts were slowly working on their Albums. From Jah Lil, Chronixx, Lila, Keznandi, Daville, Spragga Benz and a list of other stars were putting the finishing touches on their projects. Some acts were midway through their projects.
A year later and Dancehall delivered some solid singles. Yes there had been an odd album here and there. But what’s for sure is the Reggae category has over 12 projects comfortably and they’re not compilation pieces they’re actually Albums.
So on the record since April of 2025 till October 2025 there is a clear resurgence of Reggae, with Dancehall looking again like little brother. With all these new albums and watching these same names now covering festivals and tours. It’s safe to say that Reggae still has the heart of the people. Reggae is still the main selling of our diaspora. Reggae has again started to build a superstar and his name is “Chronixx”.
From the looks of things and the numbers we’ve seen from the release of his album he’s dominated the charts in over 18 countries within a week. (Plus we saw him at Reggae Land tease these singles to a warm reception).
The post is food for thought. If there are over 12 strong projects from great acts. They’re all touring and all working. Like any genre that goes all the way it will be on the shoulders of the stars and the supporting cast.
