What type of music are we making? Are we making soul searching music that improves and empowers us? Or are we making music that just merely entertains us?
For the last 30 years within Reggae and Dancehall culture the soundscape has changed. There is now “Trap Dancehall” like a subgenre of Dancehall. The sonic/tempo is very close to Hip Hop which it does have elements of. The same has to be said about Reggae the vibe the texture and the sound that gave it that world wide appeal. It’s not the same. Is the music evolving? Is it the Productions and the artist that have now looked for a quick fix. Or is it just as said “evolving” of sound and pallet.
Here is a fact. Hip Hop in the last 50 years has become the number one genre. There is a difference between plagiarism and admiration. Anything that leads and earns the highest will be the new way and the new norm. Reggae & Dancehall has to reestablish its own identity and NOT follow the leaders.
The sound & texture the world fell inlove with needs to reestablish itself. To curate this feeling this vibe this energy. We first need to identify who we are. What is the culture about. Is this our sound? Are we creating or copying? The harsh questions of an artform. The most important ingredient that Reggae has stood on is Rastafarian belief. So let’s identify who we are and what we’re doing.
